Science Without Borders: Africa and Europe Unite for Agricultural Innovation

Available in
A new international research consortium is deepening ties between African and European agricultural institutions. Building on 15 years of collaboration, the initiative focuses on climate adaptation, biodiversity, and food system transformation.
Sorghum, a drought-resistant cereal native to West Africa, is now gaining traction in Europe—thanks to joint breeding programs. Mixed cropping systems, common in Africa, are being studied as models of resilience for European farms facing climate volatility.
Jean-Paul Laclau of CIRAD emphasizes the importance of diversity—not just in crops, but in economic models. “Monoculture is fragile. Africa’s mixed systems offer lessons in sustainability and income stability.”
The partnership also boosts African research capacity, funding, and innovation—positioning science as a cornerstone of agricultural development across both continents.
