Dar es Salaam is hosting the first Pan-African Pork Industry Summit, a milestone event for a sector often overlooked in regional agricultural planning. Organized by the Tanzania Association of Pig Farmers (TAPIFA), the summit has attracted over 1,250 delegates from nine countries.
Summit themes and outcomes:
• Value Chain Development: Sessions are focusing on genetics, feed formulation, and meat processing. Companies from Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa are showcasing innovations in breeding and slaughterhouse automation.
• Regulatory Reform: TAPIFA is lobbying for updated standards on meat hygiene, animal welfare, and market access. The association is drafting a policy brief for the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.
• Disease Management: African swine fever remains a threat. Experts are calling for regional surveillance systems, coordinated vaccination campaigns, and farmer education.
• Market Expansion: Domestic pork consumption is rising, driven by urbanization and changing dietary preferences. Retailers and processors are exploring value-added products like sausages and cured meats.
Former Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda’s presence underscores the political will to elevate pig farming into a strategic sector. The summit is expected to catalyze investment, improve farmer incomes, and enhance protein security across East Africa.
