Smart Irrigation Technologies Poised to Transform West African Farming

Tamale, Ghana — At the recent Ghana Science Association (GSA) conference, Professor Felix Kofi Abagale, Director of the West African Centre for Water, Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture (WACWISA), unveiled a suite of smart irrigation technologies designed to revolutionize farming across semi-arid regions of West Africa. The innovations include solar-powered water pumps, precision drip systems, and soil moisture sensors that enable farmers to monitor and manage water usage in real time.
These tools are tailored to address the region’s chronic water scarcity and erratic rainfall patterns, which have long hindered agricultural productivity. Professor Abagale emphasized that integrating indigenous farming knowledge with scientific research is key to ensuring adoption and long-term impact. The technologies are part of WACWISA’s broader climate resilience strategy, which aims to safeguard food security while reducing environmental degradation.
The presentation drew interest from policymakers, agribusiness leaders, and development partners, many of whom pledged support for scaling the technologies across Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Niger. With climate change intensifying, smart irrigation is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for sustainable agriculture in West Africa.
