African Farms Positioned as Global Food Security Powerhouse

Cape Town, South Africa – October 3, 2025 – A new report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the Paris Peace Forum has highlighted Africa’s untapped potential to drive global food security. The study shows that agriculture sustains 70% of Africans and contributes nearly 30% of the continent’s GDP, yet remains severely underfunded.
In 2022, only $49 billion was invested in African agriculture—far below the $200 billion needed annually. As a result, productivity remains low, forcing the continent to import over $27 billion in cereals each year, a figure projected to quadruple by 2030 without urgent reforms.
The report stresses that investing in African agriculture could help achieve up to 50% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also reducing poverty, empowering women, and building climate resilience. “Agriculture offers one of the most direct and impactful ways to reduce poverty, empower women, and build long-term climate resilience,” said Younès Zrikem, BCG managing director and co-author of the report.
