The establishment of the Federal College of Agriculture (FCA) in Ogboinbiri, Bayelsa State, has reached a major milestone, drawing praise from key political figures for advancing agricultural education and skills development in Nigeria.
Former lawmaker Preye Oseke has commended Bola Tinubu and Douye Diri for their support in facilitating the institution’s gradual take-off.
A Milestone for Agricultural Education
The Federal College of Agriculture Ogboinbiri has now received official take-off approval from Nigeria’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, marking a significant step toward operationalising the institution.
In addition, the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria has appointed the college’s management team, signaling readiness to begin academic and administrative activities.
According to Oseke, the progress reflects years of effort and collaboration, describing the journey as “slow but progressive.”
Leadership Support Driving the Initiative
Oseke also acknowledged the contributions of senior government officials, including Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, for his role in conceptualising the project.
He further praised the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mohammad Abubakar Kyari, for supporting the implementation process and ensuring the institution moves closer to full operation.
The newly appointed provost, Dr Ibrahim Haruna Manta, alongside his team, has also been recognised as critical to the institution’s successful launch.
Building Skills Beyond Oil Dependency
The establishment of the college is seen as part of a broader strategy to diversify the economy in the Niger Delta region. Bayelsa State, traditionally reliant on oil and gas, is now investing in agriculture as a sustainable alternative for job creation and economic growth.
The institution aims to develop human capacity in agricultural skills and agribusiness, particularly among youth in host communities.
This aligns with Nigeria’s long-term goal of strengthening food security while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Legislative Foundation and Policy Backing
The creation of the college is rooted in the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (Amendment) Act, 2023. The bill, sponsored by Oseke during his tenure in the House of Representatives, was passed by the National Assembly and received presidential assent in May 2023.
The legislation formally established the Federal College of Agriculture Ogboinbiri, providing the legal framework for its development and operation.
A Step Toward Agricultural Transformation
The launch of the Federal College of Agriculture Ogboinbiri represents a strategic investment in Nigeria’s agricultural future. By equipping students with practical skills and promoting agribusiness development, the institution is expected to contribute to food production, employment and rural development.
As the college prepares to commence operations, it stands as a symbol of Nigeria’s ongoing shift toward a more diversified and resilient economy driven by agriculture and innovation.
