Global data and AI company SAS is helping South African micro-farmers improve crop planning, increase income potential and strengthen food security through a Data for Good initiative that applies advanced analytics to small-scale farming.
Developed in partnership with data science consultancy dataDecisions.ai and the nonprofit The Dream, the project analyses seasonal crop performance, growth cycles and market pricing to help farmers make more informed production decisions.
The initiative focuses on micro-farms located near the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site northwest of Johannesburg, where many farmers cultivate small plots near homes and informal settlements with limited access to finance, technology and reliable markets.
Analytics Improve Crop Planning and Profitability
The project evaluated crop performance over four growing seasons, analysing growth periods, yield variability and prevailing market prices to determine which crops offer the best returns under local conditions.
Using these insights, farmers receive recommendations on:
- Which crops to plant
- The optimal planting times
- How much to cultivate
- How to maximise returns while conserving water and labour
Unlike many precision agriculture systems, the solution does not depend on expensive sensors or advanced digital infrastructure, making it practical for resource-constrained farming communities.
Supporting Food Security Through Better Decisions
Micro-farming plays an important role in supporting household incomes and food security across South Africa, but producers often face unpredictable harvests, volatile prices and limited access to formal markets.
By identifying crops that offer stronger profitability and greater resilience, the initiative aims to reduce production risks while creating more consistent opportunities for farmers to participate in local food value chains.
The project also demonstrates how artificial intelligence and data analytics can benefit smallholder agriculture, extending advanced decision-support tools beyond large commercial farming operations.
AI Can Help Strengthen South Africa’s Food System
According to Hadley Christoffels, founder of dataDecisions.ai, improving food security requires greater support for small-scale producers.
“Food security will not be solved by commercial agriculture alone. If we are serious about building a more resilient food system, micro-farmers must be treated as essential contributors to the formal economy, not as an afterthought. They are producing food where hunger is most immediate, yet too often they do so without the data, insights and decision support needed to make every resource count.”
