Somalia Set to Export Fish to China Under Tariff-Free Deal

Somalia is set to begin exporting fish to China under a tariff-free trade agreement, opening a major new market for the country’s fisheries industry.
The agreement, concluded between Somalia and China in July, is expected to boost seafood exports and create opportunities across the fisheries value chain, from fishing and processing to storage and transportation.
Boost for Somalia’s Fisheries
Somalia has one of Africa’s longest coastlines and significant marine resources, but its fisheries sector remains largely underdeveloped.
The new access to the Chinese market could encourage investment in fishing vessels, cold-storage facilities, processing plants and export logistics.
For local fishing communities, increased demand could translate into higher incomes and new employment opportunities.
The deal could also help Somalia diversify its exports and reduce reliance on traditional sources of foreign exchange.
Focus on Value Addition
Industry growth will depend on more than simply catching and exporting fish.
Somalia will need stronger cold-chain infrastructure, modern processing facilities and reliable transportation to ensure seafood reaches Chinese consumers in good condition.
Greater processing capacity could also allow the country to export higher-value seafood products rather than raw fish, creating more jobs and increasing the economic value generated locally.
Managing Marine Resources
The expansion of exports also highlights the need for stronger fisheries management.
Somalia will need to combat illegal fishing, protect marine stocks and ensure that increased commercial activity remains sustainable.
If supported by investment and effective regulation, the China agreement could become an important step in developing Somalia’s blue economy.
For now, the tariff-free access gives Somali fish exporters an opportunity to enter one of the world’s largest seafood markets and potentially transform the country’s underutilised fisheries resources into a larger source of jobs, investment and export earnings.
