Kenya Cuts Farm Input Prices o Boost Agricultural Production

Kenya has announced major reductions in agricultural input prices ahead of the October short rains, with certified maize seed prices set to fall by 50% from KSh300 to KSh150 per bag.
The government will also cut the price of a 50kg bag of subsidised fertiliser by KSh500, from KSh2,500 to KSh2,000. The changes are expected to take effect nationwide within two weeks.
President William Ruto said the lower costs are intended to make farming more profitable, encourage higher production and strengthen food security. The move could also create opportunities for agribusiness, commercial farming, Agro-processing and contract farming by improving farmers’ margins.
The government hopes that making agriculture more viable will also encourage more young Kenyans to pursue opportunities in the rural economy rather than seeking employment elsewhere.
