The African Development Bank (AfDB) has allocated approximately $100 million to support public health, agriculture and basic services in Sudan as the country seeks to restore essential services and rebuild economic activity disrupted by the ongoing civil war.

Sudan’s Finance Ministry announced the allocation on 15 September 2026, highlighting the funding as part of efforts to restore multilateral financial support to the country following prolonged conflict and institutional disruption.

Agriculture is expected to remain an important area of Sudan’s recovery efforts. The sector provides livelihoods for millions of people and plays a central role in food production, rural economies and the country’s wider economic recovery.

The AfDB’s Sudan country manager, David Muthusi Mutuku, said authorities are also seeking international support for electricity and energy projects valued at more than $500 million.

Sudanese authorities are further seeking the revival of an $18 million grant earmarked for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which could provide additional support for agricultural and rural development initiatives.

The combined financing needs highlight the scale of the challenge facing Sudan as it works to restore productive capacity and essential infrastructure. Reliable electricity, agricultural investment and access to development finance are important components of efforts to strengthen food production and economic activity.

For the agricultural sector, renewed international financing could support efforts to restore farming activity and basic services in rural communities, while helping create conditions for greater food security and longer-term agricultural development.

The AfDB allocation comes as Sudan seeks to re-establish relationships with multilateral financial institutions and attract additional international support for priority sectors.

With agriculture central to Sudan’s economy and livelihoods, increased development financing could play an important role in supporting the sector as the country works towards economic and agricultural recovery.
