The Federal Government has officially launched the Presidential Initiative for the Empowerment of Youth in Agriculture, also known as “The Green Money Project.” The inauguration took place at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), with Abiodun Yinusa, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Agriculture, highlighting the project’s strategic importance.
Yinusa emphasized that the initiative aims to unlock Nigeria’s agricultural potential by empowering youth and utilizing the nation’s abundant resources and untapped opportunities. He noted that this aligns with President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security and complements the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s ongoing efforts. The initiative seeks to actively involve youth in agriculture through collaboration with key stakeholders.
Addressing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, food insecurity, and the underutilization of the agricultural sector by young Nigerians, Yinusa reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to empowering youth to lead agricultural transformation. The project, part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, focuses on equipping young Nigerians with skills in modern agricultural practices, mechanization, climate-smart farming, and digital technologies. It will be implemented across universities, youth development centers, and technical colleges nationwide to contribute to achieving zero hunger in Nigeria.
Project Coordinator Charles Folayan outlined the project’s focus areas, including data development, capacity building, resource support, mentorship, and market access. FUNAAB Vice Chancellor Prof. Olushola Kehinde expressed gratitude for the institution’s inclusion as a partner, describing the initiative as timely and impactful. He expressed optimism about its potential to enhance the university’s role in food production and value chain development.
