Morocco’s agricultural landscape is undergoing a transformation, thanks to ambitious sustainability efforts led by various stakeholders. Among them, OCP Group, a global leader in fertilizers, has emerged as a key player in advancing soil health and agricultural productivity.
At the heart of OCP’s initiatives is the Al Moutmir Program, launched in 2018 to equip farmers with tailored solutions designed to improve soil conditions and enhance food security. With cutting-edge research and technology, Al Moutmir provides farmers with customized fertilizers and practical guidance, ensuring efficient land use and sustainable growth.
Impact and Reach
During Morocco’s largest Agriculture Fair, OCP shed light on Al Moutmir’s milestones. Since its inception, the initiative has developed 3,500 specialized fertilizer formulas, benefiting 40,000 farmers directly and reaching 540,000 more through digital platforms. With operations spanning 43 provinces, the program leverages the expertise of agronomists and agricultural technicians to provide hands-on support to farming communities.
Recognizing the importance of scientific research in agriculture, Al Moutmir collaborates with the University of Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P). Through mobile laboratories and advanced analysis techniques, such as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, the initiative aims to streamline soil testing. To date, over 167,400 soil analyses have been conducted across 560,000 hectares, guiding farmers toward precision agriculture.
Integrating Technology for Smarter Agriculture
In an age where digital solutions are reshaping industries, Al Moutmir is embracing smart-packaging technology developed by UM6P ecosystem startup SensThings. The innovation integrates electronic chips into fertilizer bags, allowing farmers to authenticate and trace their products while ensuring quality control. More than one million of these smart-packaged fertilizer bags have been introduced for the 2024-2025 agricultural season.
Beyond fertilizers, the initiative has teamed up with GPS-Maroc to create a real-time map of fertilizer distribution points. This development enables better access to resources and promotes the adoption of Bulk-Blending technology, an approach that ensures optimized nutrient mixes tailored to different soil compositions.
Commitment to Livestock Sustainability
As Morocco faces challenges such as drought-induced livestock declines, OCP is stepping in with dedicated support programs. Al Moutmir recently launched an initiative to assist livestock farmers by offering technical guidance, optimized feed formulations, and improved livestock management. Two pilot zones—Rhamna and Sidi Bennour—are already benefiting from these efforts, fostering resilience in the agricultural sector.
Empowering Farmers Through Education
One of Al Moutmir’s pillars is farmer education, ensuring that communities not only receive resources but also develop essential skills. Through 17,500+ training sessions, agronomists work directly with farmers via field visits and schools, adopting a “seeing is believing” approach to learning.
To further democratize agricultural knowledge, the program has introduced Agripedia, an online platform offering research papers, technical guides, and multimedia content. This resource caters to farmers, agronomists, and students, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Sustainable Growth
As Al Moutmir advances, OCP Group remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and farmer empowerment. By integrating new technologies, fostering collaborations, and expanding training programs, the initiative continues to shape Morocco’s agricultural future.
With its 29,320 field platforms spanning diverse crops—including cereals, legumes, olives, vegetables, and quinoa—Al Moutmir is leading a new era of precision agriculture, bridging the gap between tradition and technological progress.
As Morocco navigates challenges such as climate change and water scarcity, initiatives like Al Moutmir provide a beacon of hope. By supporting farmers with science-driven solutions, OCP is not only enhancing productivity but also reinventing the way agriculture sustains livelihoods and nourishes communities.
