Smart Farming Practices Strengthen Pineapple Production in Kenya

In Thika, Kenya, pineapple farming is undergoing a major transformation as Del Monte Kenya embraces climate-resilient strategies and modern agricultural technologies to protect yields and promote sustainability.
Faced with growing climate challenges such as flooding and extended droughts, the company has overhauled its irrigation systems—expanding dam capacity and shifting to water-saving drip irrigation, which has reduced water usage by 40%.
Covering a massive 4,200 hectares, the plantation yields about 200,000 metric tons of pineapples annually. To maintain production throughout the year, Del Monte has integrated advanced tools such as drone surveillance, satellite mapping, and precision irrigation. With 70,000 pineapple plants per hectare and an 18-month growing cycle, effective water and nutrient management is key.
In a move to further enhance sustainability, Del Monte has introduced a biofertilizer facility that recycles pineapple waste into natural fertilizers. Developed in partnership with a biotech firm, the plant supports greener farming practices and has the potential to offer low-cost solutions for smallholder farmers across East Africa.
The company’s environmental efforts include planting over 8,200 trees to restore local ecosystems and protect riverbanks near the Thika and Athi Rivers. Reforestation, along with partnerships with local communities, is aimed at conserving biodiversity and supporting climate stability.
Smart technologies like soil sensors and geospatial tools help optimize decisions around irrigation, pest control, and nutrient application—reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency. The farm also uses composting and cover crops to boost soil health and reduce reliance on chemicals.
Beyond agriculture, Del Monte plays a major role in community development. Employing 6,500 people directly and many more indirectly, the company exports pineapples to global markets while investing in local schools, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure.
Del Monte Kenya’s evolving approach reflects a growing shift toward regenerative agriculture. By combining innovation with social and environmental responsibility, the company is showing how agribusinesses can adapt to climate change while delivering positive outcomes for both people and the planet.
