Thirteen West African countries are advancing a bold regional initiative to fortify rice production against the growing threats of climate change. Backed by a $9.44 million grant from the African Development Fund, the REWARD–Adaptation project is set to transform rice value chains with climate-smart technologies, capacity building, and data-driven decision-making. The program is implemented by AfricaRice, a pan-African research powerhouse, with funding drawn from the African Development Bank’s Climate Action Window.
A Pan-African Approach to Climate-Resilient Agriculture
Participating countries—Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo—share a common goal: reduce emissions, improve food security, and elevate resilience within rice ecosystems.
Key components of the project include:
- Distribution of climate-resilient seed varieties to 11,000 farmers, prioritizing youth (6,600) and women (4,950) to build inclusive rural economies.
- Training for 12,600 farmers and processors on sustainable agricultural practices, with a strong focus on local seed system development and agro-ecological adaptation.
- Support to 65 SMEs through access to low-emission rice processing equipment and community-driven innovation hubs.
Climate Services Take Center Stage
Adaptation hinges on information. The initiative scales up meteorological capacity through:
- Deployment of automated weather stations (four per country).
- Expansion of agro-meteorological networks, facilitating real-time weather forecasts.
- Dissemination of data via digital platforms and radio, expected to reach 2 million beneficiaries.
- Enhancement of early warning systems, enabling timely responses to climate-related disruptions.
Job Creation & Rural Empowerment
According to AfDB Senior Irrigation Engineer Marwan Ladki, the project will generate 47,000 job opportunities, including 8,000 permanent roles. These figures signal substantial growth in regional employment—especially seasonal jobs tied to the rice value chain.
The REWARD–Adaptation project is more than a climate intervention—it’s a platform for pan-African cooperation in agricultural resilience. For stakeholders in food security, trade, and policy, it presents a replicable model for integrating technology, gender equity, and climate services into core agricultural planning.
Agrifocus Africa will continue to spotlight initiatives like REWARD–Adaptation that elevate African agriculture through innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. The future of food security lies not just in what we grow—but in how we grow it.
