Exporters Embrace Biocontrol to Meet EU Standards

Kenya’s avocado industry is undergoing a quiet revolution as exporters adopt biological pest control methods to meet stringent EU phytosanitary requirements. Among them is Mary Wambui, a Murang’a-based farmer whose orchard now serves as a model for sustainable compliance.
After facing fruit abortion and anthracnose outbreaks earlier this year, Wambui partnered with agronomists to implement targeted biocontrols using Trichoderma fungi and neem-based sprays. Her farm now meets EU traceability standards and has secured contracts with buyers in Germany and the Netherlands.
Kenya’s avocado exports are projected to grow by 18% in 2025, with Murang’a County leading the charge. The government has launched a certification fast-track program to help smallholders access premium markets.
“This is about more than exports—it’s about dignity and global relevance,” Wambui told FarmBiz Africa in a feature published September 21st.
