DIGISOL Launches Mobile App to Advance Smart Farming in Nigeria

A consortium of agricultural experts under the Digital Solutions (DIGISOL) platform has introduced a new mobile application aimed at promoting smart, sustainable, and efficient farming practices among Nigerian farmers.
The EU-funded initiative was officially launched during a two-day workshop held at the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Imo State, bringing together farmers and key stakeholders.
UAES Vice-Chancellor and DIGISOL Project Manager, Prof. Christopher Eze, highlighted the project’s dual focus on research and practical support for farmers in remote areas, particularly across Imo, Ogun, and Kwara States. He emphasized the platform’s potential to enhance collaboration between academic institutions, tech hubs, and small enterprises, while providing farmers with access to vital resources such as funding, input networks, and market linkages.
DIGISOL Team Lead, Mr. Chris Addy-Nayo, underscored the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships—linking academia, government, and private industry—to drive innovation and agricultural development.
National Coordinator Prof. Chinasaokwu Onyemauwa noted that insights from the workshop would inform broader efforts to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and farming systems nationwide.
Representatives from partner universities, including Dr. Ajala Tajudeen of Al-Hikmah University and Dr. Folasade Oke of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, stressed the urgency of digital transformation in agriculture and SME development to combat food insecurity.
DIGISOL’s ICT Director, Dr. Leonard Orji, officially unveiled the mobile app, while ICT Consultant Mr. Destiny Brotobo demonstrated its capabilities—offering farmers real-time updates on climate conditions, seasonal guidance, funding opportunities, networking tools, and market access.
Additional speakers included Chiara Frencia (Secretary-General, Startup Europe Regions Network), Claudia Baracchini (Coordinator, FI4INN), Engr. Emmanuel Amadi (DIGISOL Telecon Expert), and Barr. Stella Ezenduka (General Manager, Imo Digital City).
Participants praised the workshop as both insightful and impactful, marking a significant step toward digital empowerment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
