Expanding Sustainable Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, Co-Funded with the aid of Zoetis and Gates Foundation

Strengthened by a new grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Zoetis is launching the AfricanLivestockProductivity and Health Promotion (A.L.P.H.A.) initiative to improve livestock health and productivityin sub-SaharanAfrica. Building on previous successes, the ALPHA Plus initiative aims to train 100,000 stakeholders in skills thatimproveanimal health and farmer livelihoods by 2025. focuses on gender diversity and offers women-only training courses led bywomen on flexible schedules to accommodate other roles of women in theregion. According to a 2019 United Nationspolicy paper, female farmers in sub-Saharan Africa tend to beless productive than male farmers. The study alsodemonstrates that the gender productivity gap ismainly due to unequal access to agricultural inputs such as family labor,high-yielding crops, pesticidesand fertilizers. Nevertheless, in both subsistence agriculture and cash crops, women areessentialbreadwinners for their families. According to Landesa’s report, 60% of women employed in the regionwork asfarmers.
Zoetis also supports this commitment to women in corporate functions with equal rights. The ALPHA Plus initiative will also focus on solutions to increase fish production in Lakes Victoria and Voltabyassessing the veterinary and productivity needs of small fish producers in the region. Tilapia, in particular,provides vitalfood security for a rapidly growing and urbanizing population, but fishermen in the countrieswith the highest productionreported declining supplies, likely due to climate change. According to theFood and Agriculture Organization of theUnited Nations, tilapia is considered a “democratic fish”because of its affordability and is mainly consumed locally.
This initiative will continue to provide access to animal products, diagnostic tools and distribution networks.Zoetis isprioritizing the development of so-called “last mile” network distribution and training models aimedat extending thedelivery of medicines to even the most rural communities. For many farmers,agro/drugstores are an important resourcefor preventing common diseases and making their herdsmore sustainable. This last mile investment provides certificationtraining and cold chain improvementsto prevent product damage from power issues.
“Access to medicines and technology will help farmers raise healthier animals, be more productive andsecure moresustainable returns,” said Kristin Peck, CEO of Zoetis. This is essential for the economicdevelopment and well-being ofthe region and its people.
Zoetis launched its first sustainability initiative, Driven to Care, in 2021 and has since continued itscommitment with asustainability report released in June 2022. Internally, the company has updated itsclimate goals to include both 100%renewable energy and carbon-neutral operations by 2030. This reportaligns with the United Nations SustainableDevelopment Goals (UN SDGs) and outlines how they align withthe three pillars.
