Precision Breeding Powers Climate Resilience in South Africa

Pretoria—At the 2025 South African National Seed Organisation (SANSOR) Congress, agricultural scientists and policymakers converged to unveil a new frontier in precision breeding aimed at combating climate-induced crop failures. Leveraging genome editing, digital phenotyping, and AI-driven trait selection, researchers are developing maize and sorghum varieties that can thrive under extreme drought and heat conditions.
Dr. Geoff Graham of Corteva Agriscience emphasized that the goal is not just productivity, but survivability. “We’re not just breeding for yield—we’re breeding for survival,” he said, highlighting the urgency of adapting seed systems to erratic weather patterns.
The initiative is backed by South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, which is integrating these technologies into its Climate-Smart Agriculture Framework. With Southern Africa facing a 30% decline in rainfall over the past decade, these innovations could redefine food security and reduce dependence on imported seed varieties.
Industry leaders also called for harmonized seed certification across SADC to facilitate regional trade and scale adoption. The Congress closed with a commitment to pilot these resilient varieties in Limpopo and Northern Cape by Q4 2025.
