In response to declining soil fertility and stagnant yields, African leaders have launched the Fertilizer Industry Development Association (FIDA) during the Africa Food Systems Forum. The initiative is backed by AUDA-NEPAD, AGRA, and the African Union, and aims to improve access to quality fertilizers while promoting sustainable soil management.
AU Commissioner Moses Vilakati outlined a 100-day action plan that includes:
• Establishing regional blending facilities
• Conducting soil health mapping across 20 countries
• Creating a harmonized regulatory framework for fertilizer standards
Vilakati emphasized the urgency:
The launch comes amid growing concerns over climate change, land degradation, and the affordability of inputs for smallholder farmers.
Implications:
FIDA could reshape Africa’s input supply chains and unlock new public-private partnerships. Exporters and agribusinesses should monitor regulatory shifts and investment opportunities in soil health.
