Kenya’s specialty coffee sector is experiencing a renaissance, driven by surging global demand and premium pricing. According to the Coffee Directorate, exports of AA-grade beans have risen 12% year-on-year, with new cooperatives forming to support quality control and branding.
Farmers in Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties are adopting precision harvesting and fermentation techniques to meet international standards. “We’re no longer just selling beans—we’re selling stories, terroir, and traceability,” said cooperative leader Grace Wanjiku.
International buyers from Japan, Germany, and the U.S. have increased orders, citing Kenya’s unique flavor profiles and ethical sourcing. The government is investing in training and certification programs to scale the model nationwide.
