South Africa’s Maize Industry: Strong Production Meets Export Pressure

Available in
South Africa’s maize industry continues to demonstrate resilience, with production forecasts for the 2025/26 season estimated at around 16 million tonnes, remaining well above the country’s annual consumption needs.
Despite this strong output, export prospects are weakening. Total maize exports are expected to fall to roughly 2 million tonnes, largely due to reduced demand from international markets and improved harvests across neighboring countries.
At the same time, farmers are grappling with rising production costs. Fuel and fertilizer prices have surged, compressing margins and making expansion decisions more difficult.
Still, South Africa remains a net exporter of maize, supported by efficient commercial farming systems and strong regional demand, particularly from countries like Zimbabwe and Botswana.
Outlook:
While production remains stable, profitability in the maize sector will depend on managing input costs and diversifying export markets.
