Climate Change Threatens Africa’s Food Systems

Africa’s agricultural sector is facing increasing strain as climate change accelerates, posing a significant threat to food security, farmer livelihoods, and economic stability across the continent.
Rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events are already impacting crop production. Staple crops such as maize and wheat are particularly vulnerable, with heat stress and erratic rainfall patterns contributing to declining yields in several regions.
Experts warn that extreme heat is also limiting the number of safe working hours for farmers, further constraining productivity and increasing health risks for agricultural workers.
At the same time, global supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions are driving sharp increases in input costs. Fertilizer prices, in particular, have surged significantly in recent years, placing additional pressure on farmers who are already dealing with climate-related challenges.
For many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture accounts for a substantial share of employment and GDP, the combined impact of climate stress and rising costs is creating a complex and potentially destabilizing situation.
In response, governments, development partners, and private sector stakeholders are accelerating efforts to promote climate resilience in agriculture. Key strategies include the adoption of drought-resistant crop varieties, expansion of irrigation infrastructure, and implementation of climate-smart farming practices.
There is also growing emphasis on improving access to financing and insurance products tailored to smallholder farmers, who are among the most vulnerable to climate shocks.
“Building resilience is no longer optional—it is essential,” said an agricultural policy expert. “The future of Africa’s food systems depends on how quickly and effectively adaptation measures are scaled.”

Without sustained investment in climate adaptation and agricultural innovation, climate change is expected to significantly constrain Africa’s agricultural productivity and long-term food security.
