South Africa’s agriculture sector is defying global economic turbulence with steady growth and strategic adaptation. At the launch of the Absa AgriTrends Spring Edition in Bredasdorp, economist Nkhensani Mashimbyi presented a cautiously optimistic forecast.
Key performance indicators:
• Horticulture Surge: Citrus, table grapes, and avocados are driving export growth. Improved port logistics—especially at Durban and Gqeberha—have reduced delays and spoilage. Export volumes to the Middle East and Asia are rising.
• Livestock Recovery: Beef and poultry margins are improving due to lower feed costs and enhanced disease control. The Department of Agriculture has expanded FMD vaccination zones and introduced digital traceability systems.
• Vegetable Demand: Botswana’s reopening to South African produce is boosting regional trade. Tomatoes, onions, and leafy greens are in high demand, with cross-border logistics improving through SADC coordination.
• Trade Imperatives: Mashimbyi stressed the need for deeper market access, especially in West Africa and the EU. He called for investment in cold chain infrastructure and harmonized export standards.
Despite a 13.8% year-on-year growth, challenges remain. Input costs, land reform uncertainty, and climate volatility could dampen future gains. Strategic investment and policy coherence will be critical to sustaining momentum.
