Ethiopia Records Strong Growth in Wheat Production Amid Irrigation Expansion

Available in
Ethiopia has reported robust growth in domestic wheat production, supported by expanded irrigation projects and improved seed distribution programmes.
Government officials say large-scale irrigation schemes have enabled year-round cultivation in regions previously dependent on seasonal rainfall. This has significantly boosted yields and reduced vulnerability to drought conditions that have historically disrupted output.
Ethiopia has traditionally been a net wheat importer, but recent policy reforms aim to achieve self-sufficiency and potentially generate export surpluses. Enhanced extension services, mechanised support and access to improved seed varieties have contributed to rising production volumes.
Agricultural analysts note that sustained investment in storage, transport infrastructure and milling capacity will be essential to consolidate gains and minimise post-harvest losses.
With a rapidly growing population and increasing urban demand, expanding domestic grain production is central to Ethiopia’s broader food security and economic transformation strategy.
