Zimbabwe Targets 340% Crop Output Surge for 2025

Zimbabwe’s government has announced a bold plan to increase major crop production by 340% in the 2024/25 season. The strategy includes:
• Distribution of drought-tolerant seed varieties for maize, sorghum, and millet
• Mechanization support through subsidized tractor leasing schemes
• Expanded irrigation projects in Mashonaland and Matabeleland provinces
This push is part of a broader effort to achieve food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports. The government is also conducting its first National Agricultural and Livestock Census since independence, with FAO support. The census will gather data on land use, livestock populations, and farmer demographics to guide future policy.
Officials say the plan will also support agro-processing zones, aiming to add value to crops and stimulate rural economies. The Ministry of Agriculture expects the initiative to create over 100,000 jobs and increase national grain reserves by 60%.
