Agroecology and Farmer Entrepreneurship Gain Ground

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is scaling up its Healthy Soil Healthy Food project, spotlighting agroecological farming and farmer-led entrepreneurship. At the center is Ruth Nabaggala, whose work with PELUM Uganda has helped over 100,000 farmers transition from subsistence to market-oriented farming.
Her PESA Agro Enterprise Marketing model focuses on:
• Value chain development for indigenous crops like amaranth, millet, and cowpea
• Training on composting, agroforestry, and seed saving
• Market access facilitation through farmer cooperatives and digital platforms
AFSA’s regional networks are also advocating for policy reform, pushing governments to recognize agroecology as a viable alternative to industrial agriculture. The movement is gaining traction in East Africa, with youth-led initiatives driving adoption of sustainable practices and climate-smart innovations.
