To Halt Deforestation in Africa, Invest in Agricultural Research

Deforestation across sub-Saharan Africa is accelerating at an alarming rate, with roughly 72 million hectares of forest lost between 2001 and 2023 — an area nearly as large as Kenya. The main cause? Expansion of agricultural land as farmers struggle to produce enough food on existing plots. This challenge highlights a critical opportunity: boosting agricultural productivity through research could slow forest loss while improving food security.
crop output per hectare is about half that of India and one-fifth of that in the United States. With one of the fastest-growing populations globally, expanding agricultural output without expanding farmland is essential if forests are to be preserved.
Experts argue that meaningful progress requires a strong alliance across farming communities, conservation groups, nutrition advocates, and policymakers. At the core of this effort must be significantly increased investment in agricultural research — the kind that helps farmers grow more food sustainably on land they already cultivate.
New tools such as artificial intelligence are empowering researchers to make breakthroughs in crop development. For instance, scientists are now working on varieties of bananas, maize, and sorghum that resist disease or parasitic plants. These innovations could dramatically improve yields and reduce pressure to clear forestland.
Although African leaders have acknowledged the need for stronger agricultural sectors — signing declarations such as the Maputo Declaration, which called for allocating at least 10 % of national budgets to agriculture — sustained funding for research remains elusive. Only a small number of countries consistently meet that target, and many spend so little on research that their agricultural research systems are functionally ineffective.
In contrast, nations like China and South Korea invest around 2 % of agricultural GDP in research and development. Africa’s investment typically falls below 1 %, limiting the continent’s ability to generate context-specific solutions. This is important because agricultural innovation must be tailored to local climatic and cultural conditions — technologies developed elsewhere may not work here.
Priority research areas include climate-resilient and nutrient-dense crops such as sorghum and millets, which are well-adapted to dryland conditions that make up much of Africa’s agricultural landscape. Such work also supports broader continental goals under frameworks like the Kampala CAADP Declaration (2026–2035), which calls for diversified, climate-smart agriculture.
Investing in agricultural research yields substantial economic returns — up to $200 for every $1 invested — and drives growth that disproportionately benefits rural and agricultural communities. However, the long lead time for research results often clashes with short political cycles, making it less attractive for governments focused on immediate gains.
For meaningful change, conservationists, development organizations, and agricultural leaders must speak with one voice in urging African governments to prioritize research. Such investment not only strengthens food systems and nutrition but also protects the continent’s remaining forests for future generations.
