Agriculture and agri-food systems remain one of the continent’s largest sources of employment, yet the sector continues to face challenges including limited investment, inadequate digital infrastructure, climate shocks and restricted access to markets and finance.
AI could help address some of these challenges by providing farmers and businesses with better information and more precise tools for decision-making.
AI Brings New Opportunities to Agriculture
AI is already being used in parts of Africa to deliver agricultural advice, improve market access and strengthen the efficiency of food-system interventions.
In Nigeria, digital platforms supported by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) are using machine learning to provide personalised agronomic advice to more than 87,000 women and young farmers.
Digital systems are also being used to improve agricultural input distribution. In Ghana, digital fertiliser voucher programmes have helped improve the targeting of subsidies and reduce leakages, enabling farmers to use agricultural inputs more efficiently.
These applications demonstrate that AI does not necessarily have to involve highly sophisticated machinery or expensive technologies. In many cases, the greatest value comes from using data to deliver the right information to farmers at the right time.
AI-powered tools can potentially help farmers make better decisions about planting, fertiliser application, crop management, weather risks, pest management and market opportunities.
Africa’s Youth Can Become Technology Builders
Young Africans should not be viewed solely as beneficiaries of agricultural technology. They can also become developers, entrepreneurs and business owners creating solutions for the continent’s food systems.
Platforms such as AGRA’s Youth Agripreneurs Platform are providing young entrepreneurs with access to digital learning, mentorship and market opportunities across several African countries.
This approach is important because Africa’s young population represents a significant source of innovation and entrepreneurial capacity. Giving young people access to technology, financing, skills and markets could help transform agriculture from a traditional livelihood into a more attractive and technology-driven business opportunity.
In countries such as Mali, where young people represent more than half of the population, policies that connect youth employment with digital agriculture could also help reduce economic exclusion and vulnerability.
Policy Will Determine the Scale of AI Adoption
Technology alone will not transform African agriculture. Government policy will determine whether promising innovations remain isolated projects or become widely accessible tools.
African governments need to invest in rural digital infrastructure, including reliable connectivity and access to agricultural data. AI and digital systems should also become part of national agricultural strategies and food-system monitoring frameworks.
Education systems will need to evolve as well. Young people entering the agricultural sector will increasingly require skills in digital technology, entrepreneurship, data analysis and modern agricultural practices.
Governments can also support youth-led agricultural technology businesses through appropriate regulations, grants, tax incentives and access to finance.
Better coordination across government ministries and development partners will be equally important. Food systems involve agriculture, health, trade, finance, technology, education and environmental policy, making coordination essential to achieving lasting results.
Turning Agricultural Policy into Action
Continental frameworks such as the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme and the Kampala Declaration provide policy foundations for transforming African agriculture.
The challenge is turning these commitments into practical programmes that improve productivity and create opportunities for farmers and young entrepreneurs.
In Ethiopia, AGRA and its partners are supporting the development of a national food systems roadmap that incorporates digital agriculture and youth employment objectives. In Ghana and Rwanda, work is also underway to integrate AI into national agricultural investment planning.
Experiences from Rwanda demonstrate how stronger coordination can align food-system investments with national and local development priorities. In Ghana, agricultural reforms supported by AGRA have contributed to the commercialisation of new crop varieties and significant government co-investment.
These examples suggest that technology has the greatest impact when supported by clear government strategies, investment and institutional coordination.
Building A Youth-Led Food Future
The future of African agriculture could increasingly be shaped by young people using digital tools to solve practical challenges.
A young farmer could use AI to determine how best to manage a crop, while a youth-led business could use digital technology to connect farmers with buyers or build climate-smart supply chains. Governments, meanwhile, can use real-time data to identify food-system risks and design more targeted interventions.
The opportunity is therefore much larger than simply introducing AI into agriculture. It is about creating an agricultural ecosystem in which young people have the skills, technology, finance and market access needed to build businesses and develop solutions.
Africa’s food future will depend on how effectively governments, private companies, development organisations and young entrepreneurs work together.
AI will not solve every challenge facing the continent’s agricultural sector, but it can become an important tool for improving productivity, strengthening resilience and connecting farmers to increasingly digital markets.
The greatest opportunity lies in bringing technology, policy and Africa’s young population together. If governments create the right environment and investment reaches the farmers and entrepreneurs who need it, AI could become a powerful catalyst for a more productive, inclusive and resilient African food system.
