Africa’s GDP Could Triple by 2035 with Strategic Agricultural Investment

Algiers, Algeria — Africa’s economy is projected to grow from USD 3.4 trillion to USD 15 trillion by 2035, driven largely by strategic investments in agriculture, infrastructure, and industrialization. Speaking at the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair, Patrick Ndzana Olomo of the African Union emphasized that agriculture remains central to this transformation.
He noted that annual growth rates of 7–10% are achievable if member states prioritize governance reforms, institutional capacity, and intra-African trade. Agriculture, which employs over 60% of the continent’s workforce, is seen as the backbone of this economic renaissance.
However, Olomo warned that Africa loses nearly USD 587 billion annually to corruption and illicit financial flows—resources that could otherwise fund the continent’s USD 472 billion development needs. The AU is working with member states to implement anti-corruption frameworks and unlock financing for agricultural modernization.
With rising global demand for food and climate-resilient crops, Africa’s agricultural sector holds the key to inclusive growth, job creation, and regional stability.
