South Africa has appointed Willie Aucamp as the country’s new Minister of Agriculture, replacing John Steenhuisen following changes within the Government of National Unity.
Aucamp assumes leadership of the agriculture portfolio at a critical time for the sector, which is facing ongoing challenges related to Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and efforts to expand access to international markets for South African agricultural products.
His immediate priorities include strengthening disease control measures, supporting the livestock industry’s response to FMD outbreaks, and accelerating initiatives aimed at restoring confidence in South Africa’s animal health systems. The new minister is also expected to continue work on improving export opportunities and enhancing the competitiveness of the country’s agricultural sector.
Industry body AgriSA has welcomed the appointment and expressed its commitment to working closely with Aucamp to advance agricultural growth, sustainability, and inclusivity.
During Steenhuisen’s tenure, progress was made in expanding export market access, strengthening collaboration between government and industry, advancing vaccine rollout programmes, and improving coordination through the Industry Coordination Council.
Aucamp’s appointment comes as agriculture remains a key contributor to South Africa’s economy, food security, and rural employment, with disease management and market development expected to remain central priorities for the sector.
