AI-powered virtual assistants are helping close the information gap for millions of farmers who have limited access to agricultural extension services.
In Malawi, Opportunity International’s Ulangizi chatbot provides farming advice through text and voice messages in both English and Chichewa, allowing farmers to receive guidance on crops, livestock and farming practices directly through their mobile phones.
Similarly, Ghana-based agritech company Farmerline has developed Darli, an AI-powered assistant available through WhatsApp that answers agricultural questions in multiple languages and provides practical farming recommendations.
These digital advisory services allow farmers to receive timely information without waiting for in-person extension visits, particularly in remote rural communities.
Early Detection Improves Crop Protection
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to identify crop diseases before they spread across entire fields.
Farmers can photograph affected plants using smartphones, allowing AI systems trained on thousands of crop images to identify potential diseases, nutrient deficiencies or pest infestations.
Combined with satellite monitoring and drone imagery, these technologies enable producers to detect crop stress earlier and respond before significant damage occurs.
However, agricultural experts emphasise that AI should complement, rather than replace, professional agronomic advice, as inaccurate diagnoses could lead to unnecessary input costs or crop losses.
